Cleaning & Care

Let your pipe cool completely before  emptying, cleaning, or removing the stem.

To empty:
Gently tap it against your hand or a cork knocker. Never a hard surface.

For cleaning:

  • Twist the stem off gently (one direction only)

  • Run a pipe cleaner through the stem and airway

  • For deeper cleaning, use a lightly moistened cleaner in the shank (alcohol works best)

Clean every few bowls to keep things tasting right. NEVER soak your pipe or the stem in water or anything else. Remember that this is a wooden and natural product, and soaking will ruin it. If you smoke things that are stickier, run a pipe cleaner through every time your smoke while it is still a bit warm, and if things are stubborn after cooling use a pipe cleaner soaked in alcohol.

Breaking In Your Pipe

A new pipe needs a little time to settle in. Start with a few bowls filled about ¼ full. After that, move up to half bowls for a couple of smokes. Once you’ve done that, you’re good to go with full bowls.

This gradual process helps build an even carbon layer (“cake”) while letting the wood adjust to heat slowly. It’s the difference between a pipe that lasts years and one that cracks early.

Packing Your Bowl (Simple 3-Step Method)

Good packing makes or breaks your smoke!

  • Lightly fill the bowl and gently tamp it down

  • Add more tobacco, tamp a bit firmer

  • Top it off slightly above the rim, then level it

When you draw, it should feel easy, like sipping through a straw, not sucking a milkshake.

Lighting Your Pipe

Use a soft flame—matches or a pipe lighter work best. Skip the torch. Always.

Start with a “false light”:
Move the flame in circles across the top while taking light puffs (don’t inhale). Let it go out, then gently tamp the ash flat.

Now relight the same way. This time, settle into a steady, relaxed puffing rhythm.

Relighting is normal. Everyone does it.

A Few Extra Tips

Don’t smoke all the way to the bottom—leave a little tobacco to protect the bowl

  • After smoking, you can remove the stem and blow through it to clear moisture

  • If you’re not cleaning it right away, don’t leave the stem attached for long periods—resin can cause it to stick or even crack over time

Managing Cake (That Carbon Layer)

Cake protects your pipe and improves flavor—but only if it’s controlled.

You’re aiming for about the thickness of a dime (around 1/16”).
If it gets thicker, carefully scrape it back down. Too much buildup can crack the bowl.

Some pipes come with a dark coating inside the bowl. This just helps speed up the break-in process. It doesn’t change how the pipe ultimately smokes.

Adjusting Our Pipe Stands

Our pipe stands are designed to adjust to fit your pipe perfectly.

  • The metal portion can be gently bent to accommodate the size of your pipe bowl.

  • You can also adjust the pitch of the metal to change the angle and fit.

Simply shape it as needed for a secure and comfortable rest.
